BA Teams Utilize Perch’s AI-Powered Weight Room Technology
Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, and Orlando Magic are the first NBA teams to adopt Perch, an AI-backed weight training platform developed by MIT. Perch combines 3D cameras and machine learning to quantify weight room performance, improve athlete motivation and safety, and enhance on-court performance. It is used by elite athletic organizations such as professional and high school teams to optimize performance, manage fatigue, profile athletes, and measure daily readiness.
Perch consists of three components: a 3D camera that attaches to any weight rack with Velcro straps, a battery pack, and a tablet. Athletes log in on the tablet and begin lifting, while the 3D camera captures and records sets, reps, velocity, power, and other metrics. The workout data is accessible to players and coaches via a web application, allowing them to gain insights into performance and plan future workouts accordingly.
The platform solves the problem of athletic load and its accompanying risks. Previously, strength coaches would assign lighter days of lifting after physically demanding practices or games based on their observations. However, Perch determines the intensity of training based on lift velocity, closing the feedback loop and reducing the risk of injuries while helping athletes become stronger and faster. This eliminates the need for coaches to manually track progress with clipboards.
Perch has gained popularity since its launch in 2017 and is now used by nearly one-third of the NFL, in addition to teams across the NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, and NCAA. Its customer base has expanded to include military bases, fitness and performance facilities, and high schools across the country.
