Matrix Fitness has recently launched a new initiative called Project COURAGE (Creating Opportunities for the Under Represented through Authenticity Generosity and Engagement), which aims to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. The project focuses on providing education, support, and a sense of belonging for HBCU professionals and students interested in fitness-related fields.
The Project COURAGE initiative began in July 2023 and consists of several components. The first is the Project COURAGE Panel, made up of six HBCU health and well-being professionals. This panel will offer ongoing guidance to Matrix and collaborate with Johnson Health Tech/Matrix Fitness to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives. The panel’s initial term is two years, with the option to renew.
Matrix has also created a scholarship program as part of Project COURAGE. Each year, Matrix will contribute at least $5,000 to be distributed in scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. These scholarships are available for students and professionals studying or working in fitness-related fields at HBCUs. The scholarship recipients will be chosen by the Project COURAGE Panel.
In addition to the scholarship program, Project COURAGE provides educational opportunities for HBCU students and staff. They will have access to virtual and in-person workshops and training sessions on various fitness-related topics. These educational opportunities are provided at no cost and may offer continuing education credits.
HBCU participants in Project COURAGE will also receive invitations to networking and breakout sessions. These sessions aim to strengthen connections with the Matrix team and facilitate the exchange of insights and address concerns relevant to HBCU leaders and students. Planned events include the Black Female Director Social at NIRSA and the HBCU Summit Pre-Conference event at ERSL Conference.
Matrix is committed to ensuring that HBCU staff fully understand and utilize their products. They offer on-site product training tailored to the unique needs of HBCU campuses. Matrix also provides additional support through the Matrix Learning Center, a digital resource that educates and trains customers on their product portfolio, programming, and innovative solutions.
Rebecca Peoples, Collegiate Recreation East Region Manager for Matrix Fitness, expressed excitement about Project COURAGE and highlighted the need for increased diversity in the health and wellness industry. The Project COURAGE Panel, led by Peoples, meets monthly to establish criteria and procedures for administering the scholarship program.
Tiffany Lomax, Director of Recreation and Wellness at North Carolina Central University and a graduate of an HBCU, expressed gratitude to Matrix Fitness for their commitment to this initiative. She believes that Project COURAGE will have a significant impact on underrepresented students and staff at HBCUs and the entire fitness profession.
