Huawei, a leading technology company, has opened a new HUAWEI Health Lab in Helsinki, Finland. This lab is dedicated to advancing research in the health and fitness sector. The facility is nearly 1000 square meters in size and is equipped with state-of-the-art testing equipment. It features a wide range of sports equipment, showcasing Huawei’s wearable sports and fitness algorithms in real-life applications. The lab also serves as an open research platform for technological research, detection and verification, standards R&D, and industry incubation.
Recognizing the growing demand in the health and fitness market, Huawei has established three HUAWEI Health Labs worldwide since 2016. The labs, located in Xi’an and Songshan Lakes in China, and now in Helsinki, Finland, focus on deepening research in health monitoring algorithms through wearable technologies.
The HUAWEI Health Lab in Finland has a team of experts from various fields, including physiology, AI, machine learning, software testing, and software engineering. These experts, comprising 6 PhDs and 20 professionals, ensure that the lab meets advanced global standards in sports and health research.
The lab boasts world-class sports simulation testing facilities. It has created true-to-life sports environments and scenarios in five major testing areas, covering over 20 sports and tracking more than 200 physiological and biomechanical indicators. Participants can use Huawei’s latest wearable devices, such as the HUAWEI WATCH GT 4, during the testing. The testing areas include a counter-current pool, a ski simulator, a multi-functional treadmill, an instrumented treadmill, and an open gym area with various cardiovascular workouts.
Huawei has also collaborated with European health institutions and research groups to further enhance sports and health technologies. It has partnered with the iCARE4CVD program, which focuses on cardiovascular health study and artificial intelligence methods to improve patient motivation. Huawei is the only wearable device manufacturer participating in this program. Additionally, Huawei has co-founded the Interlive consortium with six European universities, aiming to develop best practices for consumer wearables. This partnership ensures the continued scientific validity of Huawei wearables based on four standards: heart rate, step counts, caloric expenditure, and VO2 Max.
In terms of data confidentiality, Huawei has strict privacy and security principles for its wearables. The company complies with privacy regulations and ensures the secure collection, transmission, and storage of data during the research process.
Overall, Huawei’s new health lab in Finland is a significant step forward in advancing global efforts in health and fitness research. Through its state-of-the-art facilities and collaborations with European institutions, Huawei is committed to improving consumer lives through innovative sports and health technologies.
